This Pinot Gris is made entirely in old French oak barriques in the traditional Alsation style. Fermented and aged on yeast lees in these barrels for 12 months the resulting wine is a big bodied rich style with lots of complexity, yet a soft delicate finish.
The grapes for this estate grown and made wine are picked at maximum ripeness to build the weight of the wine. In this case the 2008 wine was picked at 13.5 beaume or 26 brix, allowing the wine a high potential alcohol but also at this ripeness the rich pawpaw and pear flavours are well developed. The wine is soft on the palate and finishes with plenty of flavour.
Pinot Gris hails from Alsace in NE France, and the same grape is grown in Piedmonte in NW Italy, known as Pinot Grigio. The styles of the two regions are quite different with the French making the fuller riper style from their Grand Cru sites and the Italians making a more acidic and earthy style. The Boggy Creek style is more of the French method but with New World techniques the wine is rich with fruit flavours. The use of old oak barriques allow the palate to built without the influence of new oak flavour in the wine, yet building the complexity and weight of the wine.
This is certainly a food wine and made to be enjoyed with a range of rich foods from pasta, salads, vegetable dishes to fish, crustaceans, poultry and quail and light red meats.
